Regarding the silvery benches

This morning I read this article in the NY Times about how the student section at Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium is almost never full these days. The school has been selling the excess capacity to non-students, so the games are still sold out. But the article (which is well worth your time) notes that they [...]

Dome sweet Dome

What a refreshing feeling to be back in the Carrier Dome once again to witness some Syracuse basketball in person. I was in attendance at the Cincinnati football game, but that experience just doesn’t measure up to watching my #1 favorite sporting squad of all time in action.
Let’s get to the personal highlight of [...]

The quick and the dead

The quick is the SU basketball team. Good effort by the guys on Friday night to dispatch a talented and resilient Florida squad. The dead is, of course, the football team, who laid another stinker Saturday in a season mostly full of them.
Instead of spending valuable column inches here spouting off about football, I will [...]

Bring on the Gators… please!

You have no idea how much I want to talk about basketball instead of penises. (Or maybe you do.)
Before the season, tonight’s game was circled on all the calendars. Both teams have lived up to their part of the early-season bargain, making this a scintillating matchup of top-ten teams. This is going to be [...]

Light: 1, Darkness: 0

For the first time this season, I’m legitimately frustrated to be 10,000 miles away from any television showing an SU game. I hate to miss these rare opportunities to watch SU speak the basketball gospel to a godless ACC squad. Granted Georgia Tech rarely emerges as a high profile ACC representative, but any member of [...]

Le Moyne’s gotta be feeling pretty good right now

I imagine the 2K Sports Classic organizers are still kicking themselves for inviting Ohio State instead of Le Moyne to round out the tournament in MSG last weekend. They could have had the dream Orange-Dolphins rematch in the finals instead of the listless blowout they got with UNC. Lesson learned, 2K; lesson learned.
In other news, [...]

the early view from China

I live in China these days; Beijing to be specific. In order to prevent Josh from flying solo this year — because lord knows none of the other slacker contributors to this space are likely to step up — I will try to chime in from time to time when I can glean some wisdom [...]

The Road Schedule and Smug Gottlieb

Got this quote over at Nunes/Magician; he got it in turn from the Albany Times-Union:

“I treat everybody kind of the same. If it comes across as negative, it’s because there are elephants that are in the room that a lot of people believe, and no one else is willing to say. [...]

win and in

It’s anticlimactic, there’s no glamor involved, the opponent is neither interesting nor familiar, and no ones going to storm the court. But in reality, if we beat Cincinnati tomorrow, we will seal our invitation to the NCAA Tournament.
There comes a time in each NCAA-worthy season when a team truly becomes a “lock”. People have referred [...]

Big East Conference review, part 2

As promised, here’s the second half of my survey of the Big East “preseason” results. For the first eight teams, see my previous post. This post will cover the exploits of the 8 teams predicted by the coaches to finish in the top half of the league. I’ll quote myself from the last post to [...]
