The first thing I noticed from the Robert Morris box score was Triche’s 7 assists and Scoop’s 9 (!). Damn impressive at first, but then I spotted Andy Rautins’ line and realized the team had been blessed with one of those Andy Rautins Games. When he gets in that zone, he’s a dream for a stat-stuffing PG assist accumulator. Here’s the magical formula:
- Pass the ball to Andy Rautins no matter where he is on the court
- He immediately shoots it
- Ball goes in
- You get an assist
I could get at least 4 dimes If I were on the court during an Andy Rautins Game. And Scoop and Triche were also helped by those delightful 28 forced turnovers — 60 in two games! — which generally lead to easy assists on wide open breaks.
So yes, I’m downplaying my own favorite stat from today, even though assist numbers like that usually make me drool. The fact that Robert Morris made the NCAAs last year with a 24-11 record also should make me drool, but the one key player they lost from last season really was their heart, soul, leading scorer and leading rebounder. The jury is still out on the significance of this win.
Then again, a 40 point win is effin’ old school. Crushing people with offense and defense is effin’ old school. Drool is tentatively apparent.
