And then there were none

Demetris Nichols got cut today by the Utah Jazz. Utah decided to go with the minimum roster size required by NBA rules, which is 13 players. Three other guys were cut in addition to Nichols; 2nd-round draft pick Jeremy Evans made the team. I guess Utah is in such financial straits that it makes more sense for them to cut everyone right away and leave two slots empty to sign someone down the line as needed, rather than to give deals to a couple of the players and then cut them later if necessary (i.e. if they need another point guard due to injury or something like that). I guess that’s what happens when you are paying almost $18 million to Andrei Kirilenko, he of the 10.6ppg scoring average over the last four seasons. (7th-highest paid player in the league this year. I’m just sayin’.)

Also, as commenter Brady noted on Tuesday, Jason Hart was waived by the Timberwolves. At least that move was widely expected, though. We were all pulling for Demetris; it looked like he was in the right situation and had a real shot this time. Alas, it was not to be. Whether he gives the D-League another spin or decides to go back to France (or elsewhere) remains to be seen.

So, here is your final list of 2010-11 NBA ballers out of Syracuse:

Carmelo Anthony, Nuggets
Jonny Flynn, Timberwolves
Donte Greene, Kings (I keep forgetting about him!)
Wes Johnson, Timberwolves
Andy Rautins, Knicks
Etan Thomas, Hawks
Hakim Warrick, Suns

As usual, we will have regular updates on these guys (once the season starts) as well as the guys who are playing professionally overseas. Here’s one to whet your appetite: your friend and mine Terrence Roberts scored 12 points, with 6 rebounds and 3 blocks, in his most recent Ukranian League game. He’s averaging 8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game through his first 6 games. Here he is shooting over some poor European dude. Note the proper uniform number and the obvious offensive foul happening with the right arm:

Why you gotta hate on T-Rob’s ill and-one? Just after the camera clicked he probably re-grabbed the ball on his way up and dunked it on this dudes face. Just sayin.
