Countdown to Madness

As you had better be aware, tonight (not at midnight) is SU’s Orange Madness event. First look at the new freshmen, and the leaner, meaner upperclassmen. (On the subject of which: everyone is talking - and appropriately so - about how much a summer of workouts is going to help Rakeem Christmas. But I’m eager to see what kind of shape Michael Carter-Williams is in. Based on his frame last season, he had room to put on a ton of muscle this summer without losing any quickness.) While we won’t really learn anything tonight, it always gets one’s Orange blood flowing just to see the team out on the court, throwing down crazy dunks and generally having a grand time. It whips up some excitement and gives us the jumping-off point for all the uninformed prognosticating we’ll be doing for the next three weeks, until the season kicks off in San Diego (not cancelled! whew). Which is the whole point, of course. There’s no chance it will top last year’s Legends Game, but it’ll be a blast nonetheless.

A lot happened in the SU sports landscape since the last time I was able to post in this space. The football team won (somehow) and the field hockey team lost (somehow). Yet at its core this is a basketball site and so we’ll be ramping up again as the Most Wonderful Time of the Year comes upon us once more. Notes, quotes, and screed after opinionated screed as we chronicle Syracuse’s ultimate Big East season.

To start, I’ll have a full write-up on the Madness sometime in the next few days. Then some preseason storylines, a quick Pro Update (yes, Elvir Ovcina is still playing professionally), and before you know it: GAME TIME! See you soon.
