When Jonny Flynn says it, it’s funny. When Doug Gottlieb says it, I want to punch him:
“Of course, it’s a statement,” Syracuse freshman guard Jonny Flynn said. “Getting Jim Boeheim out of the Dome, which he doesn’t like to do very often, and winning a game like this is a huge statement.”
From Mike Waters’ main game story.
Also, I loved this bit about the 2-3 Zone from last night. It confirms everything that I was hoping in my last post, and hopefully the players learned a thing or two about its value. Another non-conference foe falls into the trap!
Syracuse held Virginia to 40.6 percent shooting from the field. Syracuse’s 2-3 zone defense kept the Cavaliers on the perimeter almost the entire game. Virginia hoisted 32 shots from outside the 3-point arc.
“As good as a perimeter shooting team we are, against a team that plays 40 minutes of zone defense, we started settling for shots,” Virginia coach Dave Leitao said. “There were a lot of possessions that we settled, especially early in the game. We just settled for a shot.”
Looking good guys, looking good.
