Doug Gottlieb takes it personally

Via Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician, there’s rumors on the Internets that ESPN college hoops analyst and notorious Boeheim antagonizer Doug Gottlieb threw viritual hands with a few of his many detractors in an online chat session a few days ago.

The source of this information seems to be an Internet message board, which, as we all know, are respected the world round for their armies of meticulous fact checkers.

But like any good Syracuse fan, I’m not a big Doug Gottlieb guy. And because it’s Thursday night and I’m bored, I decided I’d check it out.

Turns out that when you look really closely, it sure seems like someone edited the transcript to get rid of Dougie’s sparring match.

So. Let’s start with the allegations. According to the originator of this rumor, the following went down in Gottlieb’s chat:

Jables (NY): Has anyone ever told you that you look like Eddie from “The Munsters”?

Doug Gottlieb: (4:03 PM ET ) Yes, as a kid, and yet I am still on TV…

Mike Indiana: How did your mediocre basketball career prepare you for a mediocre broadcasting career?

Doug Gottlieb: (4:04 PM ET ) So your mediocre life can prepare you for a mediocre afterlife…and by the way, which one of us works for ESPN…
hey and next time…when I you say 30 minutes or less….get here on time with my pizza.

John (Notre Dame): Doug, I lost my credit card, where were you last night?

SportsNation Doug Gottlieb: (4:27 PM ET ) Ask your mom.

SportsNation Doug Gottlieb: (4:34 PM ET ) Ten years ago I made a mistake…and payed for it…18 years ago YOU WERE your parents mistake and they are still paying for it.

Now for the evidence. If you happen to have an Insider subscription, you can follow along at home.

The Munsters dig is definitely in there, though you can judge for yourself whether there’s really any resemblance (here’s Doug and here’s Eddie).

But Mike from Indiana, John and John’s Mom are not in the transcript. So it’s a fake, right? Well, maybe. But probably not. Here’s what makes me think this transcript has been edited a little since the chat took place.

If you read the transcript closely, you’ll find the words “credit card” do not appear anywhere in it. And there’s only one instance of “mistake.” To wit:

Matt (New York, NY): Doug, do you feel based on the fact that you made this so called “mistake” 10 years ago you have become a role model for giving people a 2nd chance? Also it would see Eddie Sutton was the perfect guy to give that chance as he has needed a few in his time as well. Can you talk about how instrumental he has been in your career?

Doug Gottlieb: Coach is the best. Never gave any player anything. You wanted respect, you have 3 hours every afternoon to earn it.
You want shots–show me.
Burn (playing time)–show me you belong…
You want to prove you are a better person than your mistakes…show me…
he is the best.

Sure sounds like Matt from New York is referring to something that came up earlier in the chat, doesn’t it? Odd, then, that there’s no previous mention of Gottlieb’s “mistake”. So either someone just kind of tossed Dougie this softball out of the blue, or the transcript has been edited.

Given that the Munsters thing is real, and there’s an apparent follow-up comment on the stuff that’s not in there, which seems more likely to you?

(Original Deadspin post on this subject is here. “Doug Gottlieb Does Not Like Your Taunts” indeed. No sir, he does not.)

I love how people all over the country also hate this guy. Someone should keep track of all the reasons that fans of other teams are pissed at him. Maybe I’m biased, but I still think he gives us more crap than anyone. But I’ve definitely seen him dish it out to other teams plenty.

The “Mike Indiana” thing looks real, especially with the timestamp of gottliebs response. But the credit card exchange lists DG’s name as “SportsNation Doug Gottlieb” whereas the other bits (before and after) only say “Doug Gottlieb”… why would that change during the chat?

Does the ‘official transcript’ have gaps in the timestamps where these exchanges could fit? (I am not an ESPN Insider, I rely on you, Tim, to feed me what I need from there.)

Josh — When you copy and paste directly from the transcript or a live chat, it grabs this little “SN” (sportsnation) icon that either a) appears as a GIF when you paste or b) comes through as the image’s title, i.e. “sportsnation.” I deleted the little image when I copy and pasted from the transcript.

Also, the time stamps are not in the transcript. They only show in while the chat is live.
